11. Triathlete

A triathlon is composed of a 0.4-mile swim, a 12-mile bike and a 3-mile run. This 14-year-old triathlete uses math to ensure optimal performance in her training and races. Math helps maintain the cadence (revolutions per minute) on her bike so she is working within her desired pace. Math helps with same system conversions when she needs to convert kilometer distances into miles, and for keeping track of her average speed in both kilometers/hour and miles/hour. Math not only helps maximize her athletic performance, but also keeps her mind focused during the long races.
